Introduction to illustration and visual media – week 3

During class, we gathered various still-life objects that my classmates brought and went through several stages of drawing them. I tried drawing using only flat basic shapes, then only solid 3D forms, did a blind contour drawing with my eyes closed, drew the silhouettes of the surrounding spaces instead of the objects themselves, and used patterns to depict textures. Finally, we created three different compositions and chose one to complete as a detailed drawing.

Although it was a bit tiring since each drawing was done in a short time, it was my first time expressing the same still-life in so many different ways, and I found it really interesting. I also enjoyed comparing my work with my classmates’ drawings and drawing together with them. I especially liked experimenting with pencil angles and composition. From now on, I think it would be good to try setting up a composition before starting to draw, since I usually draw quite spontaneously.
